QLD State Library: The Corner

Located within the Cultural Centre at Southbank in Brisbane and about one hour’s drive north of Surfers Paradise, the Queensland State Library provides a huge array of resources for visitors of all ages and is sure to offer many hours of enjoyment to Gold Coast Kids.

The Corner  is a distinct space for children within the Qld State Library, with lots of engaging activities online on their website also. Aimed at children 8 years and under and their carers, in The Corner Gold Coast Kids can encounter and appreciate some exclusive artworks and toys that are as equally entertaining as they are educational, as well as some fantastic books and artist-led activities. The Corner also features exhibitions from the Doctor Barbara Piscitelli AM Children’s Art Archive. The Corner is open daily 10am – 3pm.

The Edge at the Queensland State Library

At The Edge  at the State Library, young Queenslanders are provided with the chance and stimulus to discover creativity across technology, science, the arts and enterprise. Aimed at imaginatively engrossing the future generation of library users, The Edge offers a continual schedule of workshops, activities, events and exhibitions for Gold Coast Kids. The Edge presents free access to an extensive range of hardware and software with free Wi-Fi access. Opportunities to develop inspired projects are made possible within the physical spaces of The Edge, where Gold Coast Kids can meet with others and work on their own assignments.

More online resources from the Qld State Library

The Queensland State Library offers many fantastic online resources which are free to use.  On the ‘TumbleBooks’ page, Gold Coast Kids can watch and listen to more than 30 e-books online, several in languages other than English. TumbleBooks also allows visitors to play games, complete puzzles and write their own book reviews.

The ‘Summer Reading Club’  is an interactive reading website that features book reviews, games, short stories and activities for young people to use throughout the school holidays.  The State Library of Queensland has hosted annual Summer Reading Clubs since the early 2000s and much of the content from previous sessions is also available online.

Secret SLQ’ is an app for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch that has been designed for children aged 8 to 14 years. Secret SLQ is the key to Gold Coast Kids unlocking challenges and discovering the treasures within State Library of Queensland. The State Library has hidden QR codes throughout their spaces to guide users to the information they require. The ultimate mission is to locate and successfully finish all 20 challenges to earn knowledge points.

Facilities at the State Library of Queensland

All entrances and areas in the State Library building at South Bank are wheel-chair and pram accessible. Additionally, disabled car parking spaces are provided, with lifts operating to all levels of the building. Wheelchair-accessible toilets are also provided, along with wheel-chair height reception and information desks.
