Community Question – Childcare for Children with Allergies

The following question was asked on Facebook by a Gold Coast Kids mum with great responses from the community.

Question

Does anyone know a good Childcare in the Ashmore/Southport area that cater for children with allergies. Have a 3 year old with milk allergies and the child care keeps giving him milk…

• Smarter kids at ashmore are great have you tried them?
• I would try family day care instead. Because its a smaller environment with less children and only one educator there is no room for error. The one educator is with your child all day, knows the child’s allergies and nobody else is there to give your child the incorrect thing.
• Bundall Children’s Joyful Place is awesome but not sure if spots are available. It’s a small centre of 3 rooms and a family environment. I have worked at a few centres and am amazed at the family environment. Not bashing it just as a child care worker it has a lot of staff that actually love the kiddies!!
• My kids go to Amicé early learning centre in Ashmore. My daughter has an egg allergy and if there is any party food brought in to the centre that they think may contain eggs, they will keep it aside for her and check with me before she eats it. Also, my daughter reacts to normal sunscreen so they allow me to bring in special sunscreen for them to use on her instead. You provide the food and drinks so there isn’t any worry of what they could be eating/ drinking. My kids are thriving there, I highly recommend them! They are in Freda Street and run from 6am till 6pm.

• Until you find one you are happy with, try getting those disposible arm bands and writing in big letters ALLEREGY they will think twice before they give him anything and check his chart or with their superior
• Southport Children’s Educational Centre, Yacht Street southport. They provide all meals, nappies and cater very well for children with any type of allergy or dietary requirements. Number is 55915660
• My son also has a strong dairy allergy. His daycare are great about it and do all they can to make sure he gets none. They have his photo on the fridge and a list of his allergies plus an action plan if he reacts. If there’s birthday cake brought in they remove the icing for him etc. Unfortunately we’re down in Burleigh. But a good example of what your centre should be doing.
• I HIGHLY recommend C&K Railway Southport, they are a fantastic childcare centre who have supported my husband and I in whatever we are trying to achieve with our 3 year old. They are more mature age than a lot of staff at other daycare centres. I checked them all out in the area before enrolling our son. They also maintain a healthy eating and nutfree policy so I know they would support you with your child’s allergies they also have the best, shaded, grassy backyard I’ve ever seen!
• I had 2 of mine at Amice Early Learning Centre for 4 years. Great staff. Small centre. Privately owned.
• Little hands at southport were fantastic!!! They also put photos up with the allergys and also the action plans.

• If I were you I would go and have a look at some of the recommended Centres and speak to the Director/Educational Leader/cook/office staff to find out how they cater for allergies and their procedures regarding allergies.. you can never be too thorough when looking for care for the most important little people/person in your life! Benowa Children’s Centre caters for children with all sorts of allergies/intolerances. Good luck!
• I send our son to kool kids near TSS and they Rock seriously!! Best childcare centre we can find but unfortunately very hard to get into as long waits apparently x they cater for anything x 80 per day x
• No where near but Olsen Ave Community Children Centre near Harbour Town is awesome. They are a nut free centre and also have a cook on site. Both my kids went there. My daughter has heart problems and they were fantastic with her. I did also notice they had a board up with a list of all the kids that had different allergies.
• Kool kids ashmore!! Their amazing but need to go on waiting list (worth it!)
• Kool kids are opening in clear island waters too
• Kool Kids but not sure if you can get in.
• There r so many different opinions & all very valid points – but it’s up to the director and educators in the centre to b trained & well informed!
  As a director of a centre I can assure u all my staff are well aware of any children with special dietary requirements! These children r given individual plates/ bowls with wrapped food

•  My son is in grade 1 now but from 3 months – 5 years he went to Ashmore community childcare centre, I loved it, they are not profit so you don’t pay for the extras such as a visit from old McDonalds farm etc, they are a sunsmart centre so provide hats, sunscreen etc and meals with an on site coo

• I’d be definitely speaking to your centre’s Director about this. It would be going against their policy and procedures on allergies and dietary reqs!!! If it keeps happening, you need to report them to the state Childcare authority. 
  My son goes to Little Hands and are awesome with following this policy.

• I know an awesome one in Helensvale?? Young Discoverers are amazing and you don’t pay for public holidays!!
• Trinity child care at Carey Lane Southport. My 3 go there and they are fantastic. They cater to kids with allergies no problems. They are also a community Childcare which I love. I’ve got 2 in Junior Kindy and 1 in the Kindy room and they love it.

• Ashmore Community Daycare Centre is a non-for-profit centre that has very reasonable fees and and on site cook. I have sent both my children there and as its a community centre parents have a much bigger role in the management. Highly recommend, they have some places available now.
• kool kids ashmore, nezt to ashmore plaza, my son was there fron toddlers until he finished preschool in dec, claire the director is fantastic, she also taught my 2 other boys at another centre, cant recommend them highly enough.

• C an K railway in southport. Really really really recommend it for any child. My son looves it there. Great natural outdoor area and he loves all the daycare mums and friends.
