National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day

National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day is celebrated on 4 August.

The purpose of the day is to celebrate the importance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children within family and community.

Kids in Culture: Strong. Proud. Resilient.

The campaign theme focuses on issues of wellbeing and protection of Indigenous children, and the role culture plays in keeping them safe. This connection with culture is even more important for the most vulnerable children and it is important to ensure those that are in out-of-home care continue to have vital contact with their family, community and culture.

Over 1/3 of children in care across Australia are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. This number needs to be reduced.

Culture also plays an important role in the development and early education of Indigenous children, including their wellbeing, self-esteem, identity and sense of belonging.

To help spread understanding and awareness of the situation, is the short advertisement at the bottom of this page. It’s a cute watch, and really drives home the importance of culture for Indigenous children.
